About Us

We are a Community Organisation run by volunteers. We work closely with the Parish Council and the South Derbyshire District Council.

MARs is run by a board who hold regular monthly meetings and an annual general meeting when accounts are prepared. Minutes of meetings are circulated to members of the organisation. We also have a salaried Manager who runs MARs on a day-to-day basis.

We always welcome new volunteers who want to help MARs. You could join us as a board member, a volunteer or a champion for a group within the community or just to help out. Please contact info@melbourneassemblyrooms.co.uk and tell us how you would like to be involved.

A Bit of History

The building was opened as the village school in 1897 and later became a Grade II listed building. When the school closed it was run by the Parish Council as a community centre for over 30 years. In 2012 a group of local residents took over control with a view to running MARs. It continues to be run by local people on behalf of the community.

Over several years the board of MARs, with help from SDDC, various grants and local fundraising have developed the building and continue to make improvements. It is now an excellent live performance venue as well as a flexible space for local people to use.

The work continues.
